A Water Softener tank is filled with sodium-ion resin beads, which filter out calcium and magnesium ions (hardness) from the water in exchange for the sodium ions. The system periodically regenerates itself by flushing the beads with sodium ions and fresh water. The regenerated resin beads can be used again and again.
