Having hot water readily available in our homes is something we have all become accustomed to. In fact, most people take it for granted. That is until your water heater stops working, and of course, it’s typically at the worst time. Sometimes a water heater malfunctions or breaks down without warning. However, there are times in which there will be signs your water heater is not working properly. The following are four signs that your water heater may be failing:

1. Tank Water is Leaking
   Fractures and cracks can be caused by corrosion within the water tank, which will lead to water pooling beneath the tank. Hot water leaking is definitely a sign of failure and typically requires replacement of the water heater. If not replaced immediately, a faulty water heater can flood your home.
2. Pressure Relief Valve Failure
   A buildup of rust, mineral salt, and corrosion can cause a Temperature and Pressure Relief (TPR) valve to fail to function. It is rare, but a failed TPR valve can cause catastrophic damage. If the TPR valve malfunctions, the water in the tank can go beyond the boiling point, become steam, and cause the tank to explode sending it like a missile up through the structure.
3. Slow or Lack of Hot Water
   One sure sign of a failing water heater is If the water in your home doesn’t seem to get as hot as usual, or it takes a while for hot water to start coming from the tap. Over time, mineral deposits build up in the tank and create an obstruction between the burner and the water. This causes cooler water to come from faucets because less heat reaches the water in the tank. The more sediments buildup, the harder your heater has to work and ultimately fails.  
4. Murky, Smelly Water
   Water that appears to be cloudy when coming out of the faucet and has a metallic smell, and possibly taste, are signs your water heater is failing. The cloudy look is caused by mineral deposits, which also results in the metallic smell and taste.
