Problem: I have no hot water.
Nick’s Hint:
Gas Water Heater...Your pilot light might have gone out. Carefully remove the inspection door (most are at the bottom of the heater) and look for a small flame. If there is no flame -- and you feel confident -- follow the instructions printed on the heater to re-light. If the pilot will not stay lit, you might need a TownSide Plumbing professional. CAUTION!!!!...IF YOU SMELL GAS DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LIGHT WITHOUT EXPERIENCED ASSISTANCE. Keep in mind that there was a reason the pilot shut off. It may occur again.
Electric Water Heater...The power may have shut off at the circuit breaker panel. Most electric water heaters do not have a switch at the water heater location – but if there is -- try this first. If you feel confident, locate the dedicated water heater breaker on your fuse panel (likely a larger switch). If the breaker has "tripped" -- move the switch to the off position first to reset -- then to the on position. If it immediately trips again DO NOT reattempt. If it stays on -- check the temperature of the water in about 20 minutes. If you still do not have hot water or if the breaker immediately trips when reset, call a TownSide Plumbing professional. Keep in mind that there was a reason for the breaker to shut off. It may occur again.
Problem: Why does my lavatory drain keep clogging?
Nick’s Hint:
Check to see if the drain stopper is fully open and is free of hair and debris. If you can remove the pop up stopper, the clog sometimes comes up with it (hope you have a strong stomach). Look into the drain with a flashlight to better inspect. There will naturally be a circle of water at the bottom. If the drain appears clear, you likely have a clogged drainpipe. I do not recommend harsh chemicals as they are dangerous and impact our Mother Earth. If the problem persists call a TownSide Plumbing professional.
A good practice is to pour inexpensive white vinegar down the drain every few months. Vinegar will help keep hair, soap scum and grease dissolved and is environmentally friendly. The same can be done in the tub and kitchen sink also.
